This research is done to deepen the understanding of the consecrated life of theSisters of the Little Flower of Bethany (1921, Mangalore, India), as a call to live compassion and its relevance in the contemporary ecclesial, religious and social context of India. It studies consecrated life as participation in the Missio Dei, and as such, focusses on the nature of God’s compassionate love and the dynamics of its revelation and outflow toward his people through chosen intermediaries, and which finds its culmination in Jesus the Incarnate Son of God. The study surveys also the history of consecrated life highlighting a few paradigmatic models of those who continue the mission of Jesus “who went about doing good and healing all” (Acts 10:38). The research situates and studies as part of this historical continuum the God experience and the mission of the Servant of God Raymond Francis Camillus Mascarenhas (1875-1960), bequeathed to the Congregation of the Sisters of the Little Flower of Bethany which he founded and fostered in order to live the compassionate love of God revealed in Christ to the suffering humanity. The study examines how the Congregation understands and lives this charismatic mission of living compassion in the multicultural and pluralistic religious society of India. The thesis concludes with the enunciation of a few opportunities and proposals, also in the light of the past few General Chapters, to live more radically the charismatic identity of the Bethany Sisters of being carriers of God’s compassion in the contemporary world.
